Sadly many Calgary Senior Citizens reluctantly sell their much loved home due to financial strain or mobility issues WITHOUT being advised of their options. Knowledge is power.
While staying in your current home may not be possible for everyone, below are some examples of programs to help seniors experiencing financial or mobility issues to maintain an independent lifestyle in their own home.
As an accredited SRES (Seniors Real Estate Specialist), I'm happy to meet with you & your family to review your options & provide the information you need to make the best decision for you.
Having helped Seniors both stay & move in the past, I can provide you with information about government programs & private companies to assist you with staying in your current home or organizing & preparing it for your move & sale.
With the rise in costs for food, transportation, utilities, & property taxes, many Alberta Seniors are faced with selling their homes to lower their monthly expenses. This government program helps Seniors to stay in their current home by deferring their property tax payments.
Mobility & health issues can also play a role. In July of 2016, the Alberta government launched "SHARP" - The Seniors Home Adaptation and Repair Program to provide low-interest home equity loans to qualified applicants. These loans DO NOT require monthly payments - payment of the loan is deferred to when you later sell the home.
If condominium living isn't for you, here's a link to other independent, supportive & combined housing options for seniors in the province of Alberta.
